The Least of These

There are 6.7 billion people in the world.

1.2 billion are trying to survive on less than $1 a day. Two billion others are trying to live on less than $2 a day.

Massive numbers are dying

Malnutrition kills more than 5 million children yearly. Tha means that hunger kills one child every five seconds, or 13,698 a day. 35,000 people overall die each day of malnutrition.

If you're read this far, seven people have died of malnutrition.

Huge numbers lack the most basic things

2 billion people lack access to proper sanitation, and 1 billion do not have safe drinking water. Chronic hunger plagues 852 million.

It's gotten worse, not better, with time

In 1980, the world's poorest 10 percent lived on the equivalent of 72 cents a day or less. Accounting for inflation, by 1999 they were trying to live on only 58 cents a day. Between 1980 and 1999, the median income in the richest 10% of countries grew from 77 times that of the poorest 10% to a gap of 122 times.

We give 1/20 of what we think we're giving

Asked to estimate how much of the U.S. budget goes to foreign aid (not counting defense spending), Americans estimate on average 20%. Asked what proportion would be an appropriate percentage of the federal budget to go to foreign aid, people on average said 14%.

Actual amount given: 1%.

I cannot do everything, but still I can do something;
And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to
do the something that I can do.
